April 1986: Robin Wright Interview
In a recent interview, Robin Wright said she’s very disappointed with her ‘Santa Barbara’ storylines because they transformed Kelly Capwell into a confused, naive little schoolgirl. “The change in Kelly really upset me,” admits Robin. “She turned into a real baby. For a while there she couldn’t make up her mind about anything. She went back and forth between Dylan and Nick like a ping-pong ball! It was pretty frustrating for me as an actress.”
“I’m nothing like that,” she continues. “I like to get to the point of things-make decisions right away. It took Kelly months to get Dylan out of her life and out of her system. I would have done it in a matter of days.”
In spite of Robin’s obvious displeasure over her wishy-washy SB character, Wright is extremely grateful to ‘Santa Barbara’. “Santa Barbara really took a chance on me,” she admits. “The only real acting experience I’d had before landing the part of Kelly was a guest-starring role on The Yellow Rose. But they hired me anyway. I’ve learned so much from this show. Every day is an experience. There have been good times, bad times, and weird times, but I wouldn’t have traded them for anything. Santa Barbara is a soap opera within itself,” she laughs. “Our cast is one big family. We work long, hard hours together and we’re very close.”
In this article, Robin Wright also talks about her childhood. She says: “My parents divorced when I was little. My mom was in the cosmetic business and that demanded a lot of travel time. So, she and my brother Richard and I used to go all over the world together. We were the Three Musketeers. We’ve been everywhere, except for Asia. It was a lot of fun at times, but tough, too, on me as a kid. Because of the travel, my childhood was always having to make new friends wherever we went. I was so shy that I never wanted to go to school. All I ever wanted to do was hang out with my mom and brother.”
Robin Wright also talks about her boyfriend Dane Witherspoon. She says: “We met and fell in love, but neither of us likes to talk about it very much. Dane and I are both very shy. We’re not into publicizing our romance. It’s real. It’s private. And we’ll try to keep it that way.”

1986: Robin Wright talks about Jessica Lange, her favorite actress
In a recent interview, Robin Wright was asked to choose two roles she would have loved to play. And this is what Robin answered: “The role of Patsy Cline in SWEET DREAMS and the title role in FRANCES. I would love to do a biographical part because you get more input with a real person — you get a real sense of who they are. Both are Jessica Lange roles and I love her. I think she’s fantastic.”
May 10, 1986: Robin Wright and Dane Witherspoon cover Télé Star Magazine
Robin and her boyfriend Dane Witherspoon are on the cover of French Magazine Télé Star Magazine. The interview is about soap opera ‘Santa Barbara’ where they played lovers Kelly Capwell and Joe Perkins.
In this article, Robin Wright says she’s really tired of ‘Santa Barbara’ after working on the soap opera for almost 2 years. She says: “I am fed up with Santa Barbara. I am tired with television. The show is directed by four directors. We change of team twice per week, each time we have a new producer, a new writer and a new director, who does not have the same idea of the role as the previous one, of course. The most annoying, it is that the writers do not read the scenarios of the previous shooting. Sometimes, they even make us say the opposite of what we said the day before. It is not easy. In fact, except the actors, any technician really knows the story. The characters appear and disappear from the show according to the imagination of the directors and the producers.”
Robin Wright has other reasons of dissatisfaction about ‘Santa Barbara’. “The actor does not really have any possibility of playing. All that is asked to us is to learn forty pages of dialogues, to then say sentences such as “Your lips looks like petals of roses”, and to make these ineptitudes credible.”
Robin says that she wants to leave the show and try other things: “I signed a three-year contract which ends in July 1987 and I promised myself that never again I will make this kind of show.”
Robin also dreams to leave Los Angeles. “We would like to settle in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We like the desert, the architecture, the serenity of this state…”

July 15, 1986: Robin Wright doesn’t like her story with Page Mosely
In Soap Opera Digest magazine, Robin Wright talks about Santa Barbara.
Wright is not a fan of her story with Page Mosely. She says: “The dumbest thing that Kelly did was sleep with Nick’s brother, Dylan. She obviously didn’t think of what the outcome would be. Kelly has done plenty of other dumb things. She’d better wise up!”
Years later (in 2012 and 2014), Page Mosely revealed that he didn’t get along with Robin Wright and that he thinks that she was the reason he was fired. He said: “Robin Wright did not like me very much. I think that led to me getting knock off the show. Robin was a handful. She didn’t like to rehearse and certainly didn’t want to hang out. We had a tough time getting along at times.”
