The Yellow Rose (1984)

Plot: The Yellow Rose is a 200,000 acre ranch in Texas, once owned by Jeb Hollister (Chuck Connors), but lost in an instant through a bet. Hollister has vowed to get the ranch back from it’s new owners, the Champion family, or to spoil everything they try to do while in it’s possession.

Cast: Cybill Shepherd, Sam Elliott, David Soul, Edward Albert, Noah Beery Jr., Ken Curtis, Tom Schanley, Michelle Bennett and Chuck Connors.

Release Dates: This nighttime soap opera, produced by Paul Freeman, was broadcast on the NBC network from October 2, 1983 to May 12, 1984.

Theme Song: The series theme song “The Yellow Rose” (set to the tune of the traditional “The Yellow Rose of Texas” but with new lyrics referencing the setting of the show) was recorded by country singers Johnny Lee and Lane Brody. The song became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart on April 21, 1984.

Robin Wright’s Acting Debut as Barbara Sue Anderson

Robin Wright took her very first steps into acting with a brief role in the NBC primetime drama ‘The Yellow Rose’.

She appeared in the series finale (Season 1, Episode 22), titled “The Far Side of Fear,” which aired on May 12, 1984.

The episode drew 9.1 million viewers, giving Wright a memorable, if brief, introduction to television audiences.

In the episode, Wright played Barbara Sue Anderson, a 17 years old girl. She’s the sweet girlfriend of Whit Champion, portrayed by Tom Schanley.

However, her time on screen was short-lived; Barbara Sue is tragically killed within the first four minutes, and the rest of the story unfolds around the mystery and emotional fallout of her murder.

In 1987, Robin Wright talked a little about her first television stint and she said that she didn’t talk with Cybill Shepherd: “Cybill stayed away from the supporting cast”, Wright said, grimacing slightly.

Though her role was very small, Robin Wright’s appearance on ‘The Yellow Rose’ marked the beginning of a remarkable career.

  1. I saw every episode of “The yellow rose” and I did love every minute of it. This was an excellent series. The cast was superb and I didn’t remember one of my favorite actresses of all time (Robin Wright) had a little role in it. In fact it was her debut!!!!
The series was so well written. I don’t know why it didn’t last for more than 22 episodes, it deserved so much better. I would love to see released on a streaming platform like Netflix.
