Robin Wright as Margaret Young

Margaret Young, as brought to life by Robin Wright, is the quiet emotional center of ‘Here’.

She begins as a young woman full of promise, Richard’s (Tom Hanks) high-school sweetheart whose life is altered by an unplanned pregnancy.

In another world, she might have studied law or pursued her own ambitions, but circumstance tethers her to marriage, motherhood, and the unrelenting demands of family life.

Wright plays her with a delicate balance of warmth and restraint, allowing us to see not only the dutiful wife and mother but also the woman who carries inside her a persistent, unfulfilled longing.

One of the most striking moments of the film comes on her fiftieth birthday, when Margaret reflects aloud on everything she has put off.

She admits she never went to law school, never saw Paris in spring, never stayed at Yellowstone because it was always “too crowded.” Her words are simple, yet Wright’s delivery imbues them with such fragility and truth that the scene becomes the heart of the film.

In that moment, Margaret embodies the quiet tragedy of a life lived in service to others, with too many of her own desires deferred until “next year,” a year that never arrives.

What makes Margaret compelling is the tension between her composure and the unrest beneath it. She is not overtly rebellious, but there is a flicker of resistance in the way she speaks, a silent frustration at the boundaries imposed on her life.

The film’s experimental structure (its single fixed setting and long passage of time) might easily distance the audience, but Wright keeps us tethered through Margaret’s humanity. Even when the narrative leaps across decades, her presence remains constant, reminding us that time passes swiftly and that the cost of sacrificed dreams is often carried quietly, without spectacle.

Robin Wright infuses Margaret with both vulnerability and dignity, showing us a woman who loves deeply, regrets honestly, and still dares to dream, even when she knows those dreams may never be realized.

Robin Wright talks about the movie HERE

In March 2024, Robin Wright talked about the movie ‘Here’. She said that she and Tom Hanks will play husband and wife over the course of 70 years, from their 20s to their 80s.

The film takes place in a single room and tells the story of the different people who have lived there.

“It spans the entirety of civilization,” Wright says. “I’m almost 60 and Tom’s 60-something. We’re never looking 32 or 19 ever again.”

But Zemeckis used a “deep fake” camera that “downloaded every piece of data we ever had on screen”.  Wright says that includes being interviewed on Entertainment Tonight at 20 and her work as Kelly Capwell on soap opera ‘Santa Barbara’.

“You could see the innocence in my eyes, and they’re translating all of that youth onto my 58-year-old-face,” Wright says. “It’s so trippy. Oh, my God. Both of our mouths fell to the ground. My first question was, ‘How dangerous is that?’ But it’s happening anyway. It’s moving so fast.”

Also, Robin Wright was especially overjoyed to spend more time with her colleagues from three decades ago.

“It was as if no time had passed,” she says. “Tom, after Forrest Gump, worked many times again with Robert Zemeckis, and I worked with him three times. And then all of us getting the band back together… you couldn’t ask for a better group to work with, and we just laughed so hard all the time.”

As for the film itself, Wright teases that audiences can expect to find themselves immersed in four different storylines, following various characters as they age from 18 to 80.

“That was a new challenge, for sure,” she says. “Because we’re doing all the acting, but, you know, the deep fake is being used to make us look younger. And in the younger scenes, we have to act physically and the voice has to change. And yeah, it was a feat… it’s so much fun.”

  1. I can’t believe this movie didn’t last in theaters. This is one of the best and most heartfelt films I’ve ever seen. I have never cried so hard watching a movie in a long time. The last scene between Robin Wright and Tom Hanks is memorable and unforgettable.

  2. I agree with the previous author here: This film touched me emotionally and took me away. I am happy and grateful that I was able to watch this film and I loved watching it. Robin Wright and Tom Hanks were and are great in this film. The last scene is and was truly unforgettable. I personally think that Robin Wright was even much better in this film than Tom Hanks. She is so talented and one of the best actresses the Hollywood acting industry has ever produced. In my opinion, she deserved an Oscar long ago.
