July 6, 1994: Robin Wright in Los Angeles Times magazine

In this interview, Robin talks about ‘Forrest Gump’ and her character. Wright says: “Jenny is a lost soul who finds herself. But she is not a tragic figure, at least not more than any other girl going through her 20s and that catharsis. Maybe the difference is that we get to see her through every transformation over 30 years in a movie, as opposed to a therapy session.”

‘Forrest Gump’ director Robert Zemeckis observes: “Robin exudes a kind of strength and, at the same time, a vulnerability. She doesn’t bring any of her stardom to the role. You don’t look at her on-screen and think that this is Robin Wright’s interpretation of the character. She’s a real chameleon.”

Her costar Tom Hanks also talks about her. He says: “Robin is devoid of any pretense. In her life and in her work, she lacks any ulterior motives, which is rare. She’s also a good deal of fun. Of course, it’s not as if we did tequila shots or anything in between set-ups!”

Robin Wright also talked about her boyfriend Sean Penn. She said: “I’ve heard stuff over the last few years to the effect (that) Sean makes my decisions for me professionally, and that he’s this strong force, and I’m this quiet. That’s absolutely not true. We are so individual. The way we orchestrate our lives, approach situations, deal with business. Completely different and yet, I’ve helped him with so many things in his personal life. Also, he helped me to believe that I could be strong and stand up for myself”.

The pull of motherhood always enters into Wright’s decision to take on new acting assignments, including the decision to do “Gump,” even though her son was only 4 weeks old when filming began. She says: “People asked me, ‘How could you?’ . . . That was a major thing, but there was something about the script. I knew it was going to be great, so I dealt with the circumstances. I was just really tired.”

“I hear from older people that, with experience, you feel that things that used to burden you in your 20s don’t anymore”, Wright says, “It’s a bit easier to figure things out and not let it abuse you, like Jenny (in “Gump”) has let things abuse her. Even though she knew it was not the right path, she had to do it anyway. That was her fate. I can’t wait to get to that point where I can say, ‘Yeah. It happened. That’s life”.

October 23, 1994: Madonna talks about Robin Wright

In a Los Angeles Times magazine interview, Madonna said that she’s tired of being painted as a lonely and sad figure. She said: “When Sean (Penn) and I got divorced and he had a relationship with Robin Wright and started having children, I was forever reading stuff about how Robin was such a nice, sweet person and he seemed so much happier. You know, how he’s finally found a virtuous woman to be with. They do love to pump that up. Then I broke up with Warren (Beatty), he started dating Annette Benning and they started a family, and once again, it’s the same thing”.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE EXCERPTS OF HER INTERVIEW:

-Robin Wright said that the first time she met with Tom Hanks was in 1990. It was a screen test for Brian de Palma in ‘The Bonfire of the Vanities’ (1990) for the part that finally played Melanie Griffith.

-In 1993, when she made her screen test with Tom Hanks for ‘Forrest Gump’, Robin Wright was 8 months pregnant.

-She explains her picky approach to roles: “I want the whole package (script, director, stars) to be good. It’s a rarity that that happens, so I end up not working a lot.

-Lately Robin Wright has turned down a number of mainstream movies like Batman Forever (the role of Nicole Kidman), Jurassic Park (role of Laura Dern), The Firm (role of Jeanne Tripplehorn), Born on the Fourth of July (Kyra Sedgwick role) or the remake of Sabrina (with Harrison Ford). About this, she said: “As long as I can keep doing the lesser sold roles, I will. But I’m sure there will be times in the future I will take roles for the money, and there will be also times I want to go off the edge and do something extremely abstract. I don’t think I consciously pass on studio movies. At the end of the day, you choose a role because of what makes you feel, and that depends on where you are in life”.

  1. I love reading what Madonna has said about Robin Wright.
Maybe they were seen as rivals in the past because of Sean Penn, but I adore them both. Madonna is my all-time favorite singer and Robin Wright is my favorite actress.
They seem like very different people. Madonna has always embraced the spotlight and thrives on being seen while Robin is much more private and reserved, someone who doesn’t naturally gravitate toward public events or fan interactions. But at their core they have so much in common: they are both incredibly strong, independent, feminist and immensely talented women.
To me, Madonna is the greatest in music and Robin Wright is the greatest in film and television. Two icons, each in their own world and I admire them both deeply.
