Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson) is a Los Angeles police officer who works out of the Rampart Division. Dave is misogynistic, racist, brutally violent, egotistical and a womanizer.

One night on a bar, Dave meets Linda Fentress, a lawyer played by Robin Wright. What begins as a one-night stand develops into a sexual, toxic and masochist relationship.

A conflict blooms in that it would be much more beneficial for her to work against him. When Linda attempts to discuss feelings vs. professionalism and the reality of the situation with him, he cannot get past the fact that she will not simply do as he says.

Brown’s every encounter with a female reinforces his paranoia that women want to deflate his manhood by sucking him dry. That paranoia is made literal through Brown’s relationship with Linda.
